8. Aligarh Muslim University

Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), the brainchild of Sir Syed Ahmed Khan was established in 1875. It was initially known as Madrasatul Uloom Musalmanan-e-Hind and was later called as Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College). This university came into existence with a view to tutor Muslim students in the country to land jobs in government services and prepare them for advanced education in European universities.

The Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College was renamed as Aligarh Muslim University in the year 1920. The main campus of this university is based in the city of Aligarh and two fully functioning off-campus centers are situated in the cities of Malappuram and Murshidabad.

AMU is also one of the first purely residential educational institutions in the country to be set up either by the government or the public in India.
