IIM-A Tweaks Admission Policy; Will have Fewer Engineers in 2014

As per the institute, 2012-14 and 2013-15 batch comprised of more than 96 percent of students from engineering background. With a view to condense this figure to the mid-80s, IIM-A has put forward two major changes in CAT-2013 that will have substantial effect on the composition of fresh batches. The proposal includes a new formula for determining the application rating, and a provision that allows top performers in the five academic categories to be directly shortlisted for written analysis and personal interview (WA-PI) round.

IIMs in the past have been strongly condemned for backing students from engineering backgrounds, especially the candidates from the IITs. The proposed changes in the admission policy may have an impact on IIMs pro-engineering image and can prove to be boon to students from other academic backgrounds.

Other premier B-Schools in the country, namely, IIM Bangalore and IIM Calcutta have greater presence of students from non-engineering backgrounds in their current batches when compared to IIM-Ahmedabad.
