One of the worst beliefs of the manager is ‘happy team means a team with no work and all relaxation'. Once your teammate has reached the target before the deadline, don’t forget to appreciate him and give him some perks. If you get people who are smart to end their work before the deadline, it doesn’t mean you have to increase their workload. Of course, you can increase the workload but gradually. You never want to make an impression that a manager is someone who is super silent and not reachable to the subordinates.  Obviously, you have to appear as the manager who wants officially written requests to file but it doesn’t mean you cannot reply in a friendly manner.
