The next university on our list is class apart from the rest. The University of Allahabad is one of the oldest varsities on the Indian subcontinent to primarily use English as a medium of instruction. This university was at one point popularly known as the ‘Oxford of the East’.

The origin of this university lies in the Muir Central College, which was named after Lt. Governor of North-Western Provinces, Sir William Muir in 1876. Muir suggested the idea of a Central University at Allahabad, and his idea later evolved to the present day Allahabad University.
