Rural Women Woes: Lose 91 Lakh Jobs in Two Years

Bangalore: Women's employment has hit an all time low in rural areas in the past two years. Across jobs that are carried out for the major chunk of the year, an astounding 91 lakh jobs were lost by rural women. In urban areas, the situation was nearly the opposite, with more than 35 lakh women added to the workforce, said a government survey, as reported by Subodh Varma of TNN.

As per Amitabh Kundu, professor of economics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, this survey is an indication of the continuing employment crunch in rural areas and the most vulnerable sections such as the women are severely affected.

If the supplementary and other temporary work is taken into consideration, women's employment numbers seem to be in a better shape, but there is still a huge decline of approximately 27 lakh jobs in two years, which is shocking. This is an indication of the unfortunate reality that women are deprived from getting into longer term and better paying jobs, and are forced to land a temporary job that entails meager wages.
