KOLKATA:  Internships at the premier Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, has increased by 50 per cent this season, officials said.

Internships for the 2015-16 session began from August 1 and the number of offers went up by 50 per cent as compared to last year while the number of companies visiting the campus also went up by 33 per cent, they said.

Top global brands such as Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, Microsoft, Facebook, Texas Instruments and Nomura, besides FMCG giants ITC, Hindustan Unilever and Reckitt Benckiser visited the campus.

Prof SK Barai, Chairman, Career Development Center, IIT-Kharagpur, said that with top-notch brands offering internships, there are high chances of converting them to pre-placement offers (PPOs) and thus automatically enrolling such companies as recruiters for final placement.

Atal Ashutosh Agarwal, Vice President, Technology Students' Gymkhana of the IIT, said interdisciplinary academic programmes are responsible for the enthusiasm shown by corporates.

"With a larger set of companies offering diverse set of portfolios ranging from core engineering to consultancy, finance, analytics and start-ups, IIT Kharagpur is surely standing up to its claims of providing a unique curriculum of the IITs," he said.
