Great Indian Brain-Drain: More Indians Flying Abroad In Search Of Quality Education

Another factor that should be mentioned here is that from few years the top U.S. universities have stepped up efforts to recruit international students and especially those who can pay by their own earning. Rahul Choudaha, Chief Knowledge Officer at World Education said, “These self-funded students are exactly who that public university is looking for.” The new CGS report also found out that 19 percent in international applicants was completely aimed at institutions which provided Master’s degree.

However all this may be good news for U.S. institutions, but out here, analysts sense that this will be a concern for a country like India. “We are falling behind in adding capacity in higher education,” said Rupa Chanda, an economics professor at the Indian Institute of Management. China and many other countries are investing heavily in higher education, she notes, and creating favorable environments for foreign universities to set up branches. “So it’s no longer necessary for students in these countries to go abroad to get the kind of degree you’d get if you went abroad,” she says. This is happening to a far lesser extent in India. “We haven’t gone deep enough,” she says. “We’re missing the boat.”
