Being a Chef
Culinary Arts Program
This step is not mandatory if you want to be a good chef but if you wish to get hired by good restaurants, then this will give you a boost in the process. Different programs are offered at different levels in schools, colleges and institutes. They offer educational programs with a basic knowledge on sanitary food preparation techniques, nutrition, butchery and other basic cooking skills.
More elaborate courses are offered on business, management, human resources and other specific areas, if you wish to start your own restaurant.
Internship and Certification
This will give a boost to your resume. If your program offers an internship along with the course plan you are fortunate or else pursue for an internship yourself. Start by talking to the head chef of your favorite restaurant.
There are various certifications available by government and private institutions. The certifications could be a general one or a specific one, for example a specific cuisine or salad dressing.
Climb the Ladder
With experience and education, you can start applying for jobs in private kitchens or restaurants. You would most probably start from the bottom. So gather all the patience and start performing. There are different levels in the hierarchy to become the head chef or an executive chef of an entire restaurant or maybe just a department. Depending on your expertise, hard work and your choice, you can reach the desired level.
