IBM: How Would You Test a Calculator?

Recently in May 2013, IBM, New York based technology and consulting conglomerate used this question during the screening of a candidate for the software engineering position.

This is a hazy question that has very little direction or contest. The ideal answer to this question depends on the position for which you have been screened, and it is all about details here.

You can revert to this question by stating that, “First I would test the computing accuracy of the calculator by evaluating whether the inputs lead to their expected answers. I would also check the basic system functions of the device, which includes the likes of the clear function, power button and so on, to assess whether I’ll be facing any system errors before I can compute anything.”

But as mentioned earlier, depending on the position you have been screened for, you may have to dig deeper into the world of calculators to impress the recruiter and make the cut.
