Sawhney belongs to a middle class family where his father Ravinder Sawhney is a local businessman and mother Indu Sawhney a homemaker. It was tough for the family to think high and execute tough decisions at every stage of their life. The IIT management had conveyed a message stating that there was no provision for blind people to take up the competitive examinations but he kept trying and finally applied to several foreign universities. On March 2013 the good news arrived from U.S that Stanford University had granted him a fully funded scholarship for a 5 year engineering degree in their campus. Karthick Sawhney has decided to pursue the degree and come back to India to improve the state of people who are affected with the same disability. He wants to bring changes in the Indian administration for their outlook towards blind people.
