Uber, Skill India and Maruti Come Together to Create Driver Entrepreneurs
BENGALURU: Transportation application company ‘Uber’ has joined hands with Skill India with an aim at creating 1 million driver entrepreneurs in India by the year 2018.
Launching the initiative at the 9th Global Skills Summit at FICCI and supporting Skill India Mission, Uber announced partnerships with Maruti Suzuki and National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) in bringing this idea to life. This step might be seen as a great initiative for the unskilled class, as it aims at providing help and support for skill development and driver training programs to create livelihoods with dignity for the unskilled.
According to Amit Jain,President, Uber, this initiative has been named UberSHAAN and it aims at the under privileged and unskilled people to develop and hone their skills, so that they can become self reliant and financially independent.
Moreover, the company is all set to provide aid by helping the drivers in getting commercial licenses, finance for vehicles, and assistance in leasing.
UberSHAAN is aimed at providing opportunities to various sections across the spectrum. From providing opportunities for skill development and driver training to the unskilled; to helping trained drivers receive commercial licenses; to supporting the entrepreneurial ambitions of licensed drivers through vehicle financing and leasing solutions, UberSHAAN aims to empower 1 million Indians as micro-entrepreneurs on the Uber platform.
At present there are about 4 lakh drivers who are on the Uber platform in India, which is the second only to the United States of America. Uber and Maruti have signed a MoU, according to which the two will a 4-month pilot program in Delhi, Chennai, and Hyderabad and organise driver training programmes and on-boarding programmes, which is a prerequisite for joining the Uber platform.
