10. Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University



Established in 1911, the Lucknow based Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University, also known as the King George Medical College, has been the one to watch out for among medical education institutions in the country. Established by an act passed by the Government of Uttar Pradesh on the 16th September 2002, the varsity is committed to the propagation and advancement of knowledge in biomedical sciences. The university has presently established itself as a centre of excellence and a premier university in its sector.



The name of the University has become a bone of contention off late between the two major parties of Uttar Pradesh namely Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and Samajwadi Party (SP). Both parties have changed the name of the university when they were voted to power. The Samajwadi Party which is presently in power in Uttar Pradesh has restored the name of the varsity as King George's Medical University.
