Skill Gap among Indian Engineers a Worry for IT Companies

Bangalore: According to the findings of a survey by an employability assessment firm Aspiring Minds, only 2.68 percent out of the 5, 00,000 engineers who graduate from India annually meet the skill requirement of the IT products sectors, reports by Anumeha Chaturvedi on The Economic Times.

As per the national employability survey on engineering graduates by the firm, nearly 92 percent of the engineering graduates lack the algorithmic and computer programming skills required by the IT product companies, whereas 56 percent show lack of cognitive and soft skills.

The firm used simulated programming assignments, proprietary aptitude and language agnostic programming assignments to assess over fifty five thousand engineers for the survey.

Himanshu Aggarwal, CEO of Aspiring Minds said “There is a measurable and clear distinction between the talents required to develop IT products and typical IT services talent. While we observe employable talent is wide spread across all kind of colleges, building India’s proficiency in IT products requires significant focus, evaluating students in core technologies and investing in training”.

The top cities with respect to employable talent in IT products sector are Delhi at 10.91 percent followed by Kolkata and Bangalore, at 4.51 percent and 2.93 percent respectively. The study also cited a 12 percent fall in employability of candidates coming out of colleges from metros when compared with non-metros.
