BENGALURU: A few years ago, to be an IITian used to be a prestigious achievement, not that it is not now, but it can be said that the glorious thing has certainly faded somewhat. It is not a surprise as to the number of IIT institutes that have opened in the last few years have diluted the honor and the quality.

The QS World University Rankings 2016-17 also highlighted the falling quality of IITs as the institute lost places in the ranking. Not only IIT, but reputed Indian colleges such as Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, lost ranks and dropped out of the top 150, and IIT Madras dropped down to 101. In this field, India's best institute is IISc, ranked eleventh.

The story though didn’t change much for Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) as it retained its top position for the fifth consecutive year.

The only good news for Indian institutes came through IIT Madras which managed to break into the top 250, five ranks up from last year. Indian institutes have been representing the cream of the world education for quite a long time now, but why this sudden fall? Ben Sowter, head of research at QS Intelligence Unit answered the question, “The performance of Indian institutions in our recent regional rankings suggests that India is gaining some ground on its regional competitors. Though India is making substantial and commendable progress towards ensuring that more of its tertiary-age population has access to tertiary education, the global edition indicates that substantial challenges remain.”

Last year saw five of the Indian institutes ranking in the world's top 100 institutions in research impact, but this time the number decreased to four as reported by Business Insider.

May be if we concentrate on what is taught in our country and not on what is eaten, will make a better impact on the global rankings.
