BANGALORE: The NGO, Muktangan with the partnership of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is becoming a trend setter for the alternative education. The NGO runs the school which provides employment for the poor women who have a basic class XII qualification and education for the children in central Mumbai, reports rediff.com.

In the early 2000s the mills in the lower Parel were closed and this affected the education of worker’s children and living conditions. Thus Elizabeth who was the vice-principle of Bombay international school started a kindergarten for the children with the help of local women. As the schools became popular and the teachers started earning, the NGO got support from various corporators and local families to expand its branches with primary and secondary education.

The NGO trains class XII qualified determined people to become the teachers in their schools which benefits in an overall development in the living style. Now the Muktangan run schools are occupied with numerous students and teachers from central Mumbai. Although with the development of city and migrations it is getting difficult to educate more students, a small effort of home tuition is also being provided in such situations.

The school also focuses on the extracurricular activities and bringing out the hidden talents in children. The organization is looking forward to expand its teachers training programme to other states but not schools. The NGO's most significant feat appears to be the addition of empowered confident women to the teaching force.
