IIT Hyderabad Commemorates 'Japan Day' to Invigorate Collaboration in Technology & Research

On 23^rd October 2018, the Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad hosted “Japan Day” the first of its kind, to invigorate collaborations in areas of research and development between the two countries (India & Japan) and enhance career opportunities for IITH students in Japan.

Commenting on the occasion, Prof U.B. Desai, Director, IIT Hyderabad stated “We have today around 100 IITH graduates pursuing higher studies in Japanese Universities. In terms of universities and institutes in India, we may have the largest number of graduates studying in Japan. This is all because of JICA friendship programme.” The event was hosted in coordination with the JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) & JETRO (Japan External Trade Organization) to invite Japanese companies on campus for interaction with the IIT Hyderabad community. Companies in Information Technology, software and core engineering sectors participated in the event, some of the most notable being Toshiba, Panasonic, Denso and NEC and Toyota Research Institute. These companies made presentations that were followed by discussions with students interested in taking up employment in Japan.

With regard to this Dr. Kotaro Kataoka, Associate Professor, IIT Hyderabad, stated, “I thank the IITH community and JETRO for the initiative to convince Japanese companies in the very first attempt to visit and hire the students of IIT Hyderabad.”

Moreover as the ‘Japan Day’ was dedicated to achieving greater interactions on the areas of technology, R&D, Mr. Takashi Suzuki, Director, JETRO-Bangalore, said, “The Prime Minister of India Sri Narendra Modi is going to visit Japan in the end of this month and we have the Japanese Academic Fair planned later this week at IIT Hyderabad as well.” While Coordinator Dr. Pradeep Kumar Yemula, Assistant Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Hyderabad stated, “This event has two objectives. Firstly, explore technology and research collaborations with Japanese companies including Japanese investments in Indian Startup companies and secondly, to increase career and internship opportunities for IITH students with Japanese Industry.” At the occasion’s grand success, the event also witnessed interactions between the Japanese industry and IIT Hyderabad’s incubation center i-TIC, a platform for several start-up companies incubated by IITH Students and Faculty.
