4. Boeing Co.

Job cuts: 5,800

Number of employees: 174,400

All is not well in Boeing Co., which is one of the largest aircrafts manufacturers in the world. In the first quarter of this year, the company announced that it would cut short its workforce by more than 2,300 employees. This was shortly followed by a declaration that the company would gradually reduce the headcount of its IT employees based at Washington by about 1,500 over three years. However, not all the cuts were in the form of layoffs. Attrition claimed a major portion of the lost jobs, while many were simply transferred or relocated to nearby states. Also the recent problems with the development of commercial plane, namely, the 787 Dreamliner, and budget cuts from the U.S. military for the production of C-17 transportation jets claimed some of the jobs.

3. IBM

Job cuts: 9,400

Number of employees: 434,246

The first quarter of this year was not very fruitful for IBM. It reported a record slump in its sales, and this was followed by an announcement the company is planning to trim down its workforce by about 6,000 to 8,000 employees globally. Though the layoffs were largely away from the American shores, a large chunk of the workforce from the U.S. was unsecure and they feared the worst. As of August, more than 3,300 IBM employees from the U.S. and Canada were sacked from their jobs.
