How do you optimize your resume for a human:  1 in 4 HR managers receive 50 resumes per job listing and 1 in 10 HR Managers receive 100 resumes for each job listing.  The top 3 things hiring managers are looking for are: relevant experience, specific accomplishments and whether the resume was customized to the open position or not. HR managers also look for certain keywords that are not a part of the job description but indicate a high-quality applicant, like problem solving, leadership, good oral and written communication, team building and performance and productivity improvement.

However, use these words only in relation to your skill set; avoid use of proprietary jargon as that tends to put off HR managers. Don’t exceed two pages in length, as people are not as patient as machines and like to know the relevant points quickly. Also avoid typos, spelling and grammatical errors. If the job you’re applying for requires a portfolio, send it as an attachment to your resume; the machine will scan your resume, but your portfolio of work will be evaluated by the hiring manager.
