BENGALURU: Although, civil, mechanical and electrical engineering have been among the top choice for graduates from small colleges to the IITs, the coming of new age jobs are creating lot more likings as well as opportunities for the upcoming grads. Despite efforts to promote core engineering jobs, the 2014-2015 placement season has seen a big shift, with more number of students opting for jobs in finance, consultancy and software, reports Yogita Rao of TNN.
Since, there were big offers being made by engineering and technology firms, there weren’t much to cheer about as only 116 were from core engineering profiles out of 430 offers made at IIT-Bombay. The rest were from consulting with 96 offers, followed by finance with 75, IT/software with 112, analytics with 54, research and development with 55, and others.
Following that at IIT-Kharagpur, only 55 students got offers from IT and core sectors, as opposed to consulting 60 and finance 70. While new-age firms on the contrary hired in large numbers from across campuses. E-com firm Flipkart hired 16 students from IIT-Bombay and 19 from IIT-Madras. It made a highest of 26 offers at IIT Kharagpur and 20 at IIT-Kanpur.
Mohak Mehta, a placement coordinator at IIT-Bombay said, "Core engineering firms will take time to pick up in campuses across IITs. Even as the emphasis is on the core firms, these companies usually take a lot of time in the decision-making process." He further added, "On the contrary, with the government opening up investment options, the start-ups are the ones that are benefitting."
