Bangalore: Were you aware that only 10 percent of students in India have access to higher education? This shocking revelation was made by a report titled “Intergenerational and Regional Differentials in Higher Education in India” published by development economist, Abusaleh Shariff of the Delhi-based Centre for Research and Debates in Development Policy and Amit Sharma, research analyst of the National Council of Applied Economic Research, reports Rema Nagarajan of TNN.

As per the report, there is a huge disparity across gender and socio-economic religious groups with regards to higher education in the country. And this is not limited to any particular region.

North central region which includes the states namely Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal, and parts of northeast India are the worst hit by this discrepancy. While, northern and southern parts of the country are better placed with regards to access to higher education.

When it comes to the age group of 22-35 years, north India fared better with nearly 15 percent of students having access to higher education. It was closely followed by south India with 13 percent access. While north-central and northeastern parts of the country recorded the lowest access to higher education among both men and women.
