Bangalore: The recent trends of placements at the IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) reveals that the recruiters preferred to hire laterals, i.e. candidates with prior work experience, as reported by Devina Sengupta and Sreeradha D Basu on The Economic Times.

First timers such as Google India and other giants in the industry participated in the placement process and choose to hire laterals. Though companies such as Google India declined to reveal the exact numbers, a spokesperson said that the company had hired more laterals this year compared to the last year and that the number of such recruits was in double digits.

As per Ganesh Shermon, KPMG India partner and Country Head (Human Capital), mentioned few reasons that contributed to the recruitment of laterals. It included faster learning curve, quick adoptability, easier socialization, quick turnaround time, good interpersonal skills and most importantly lower rate of attrition.

On an average, approximately 40 to 50 percent of IIM graduates with a minimum work experience of 10 months are expected to participate in lateral placements, which happen from mid-December to mid-February.
