Bangalore: India is slowly emerging as a country that is not fit for old people, said a shocking revelation made by the survey conducted by Population Research Centre, Institute of Social and Economic Change (ISEC), Bangalore, as reported by Saswati Mukherjee B of TNN.

As per the survey, 42 percent of the male elderly people continue to work hard to earn a living, even after crossing the retirement age of 60. And to make the matters worse, nearly 70 percent of the working seniors say that they are doing so because of compulsions, not by choice.

If one thought this is the worst, here is a shocker; approximately 13 percent of male elderly population aged about 80 years, have meaningfully employed themselves.

The survey was conducted in seven Indian states, namely, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Maharashtra, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and West Bengal. And as per the experts, it is the younger generation who are to be blamed for the pathetic state of the elderly people in the country.

The survey also revealed that 49 percent of the seniors in the country are dependent on their sons, 15 percent are dependent on their spouse, while 25 percent are not dependent on anyone and take care of their own expenses.

In the words of K S James, Head of the Population Research Center,” It is unfortunate that elders are made to work after they attain a certain age. They survey proves that households with elders are better off largely because of the money contributed by seniors”, as reported by TNN.
