Take time to create and nurture relationships with your colleagues and other people around you. This helps you to build an extensive network that can help you to get assigned to eye-catching, interesting and significant tasks / projects that might otherwise go to someone else. This network may also expose you to other departments and might create new opportunities, which would not have been available to you without their recommendations. Also try to help people out when they need your assistance, which might in turn help you in the future.

You can also try to create network outside the workplace, after working hours. Socializing with colleagues after the work often makes everyone feel more relaxed and open to new relationships.

In a desperate attempt to get noticed, it is not advisable to take up tasks or activities that are beyond your technical expertise, as it can have a negative impact on your career.
