5 Years On, New IITs Still Struggle to Match the Biggies

The remoteness of these institutions seems to a major area of contention that is preventing qualified individuals from opting to work at these institutions. Speaking about this issue, a lecturer from IIT-Ropar was quoted saying, "You cannot expect good quality teachers to work in remote, village-like areas for peanuts. It's difficult for the new IITs to attract and retain talent due to their poor infrastructure", reports the TNN.

Echoing the sentiments of the lecturer from IIT- Ropar, an IIT-Mandi lecturer said that, "With most campuses located in the outskirts, the education of the children of faculty members is also a major concern".

Adding salt on the wounds of these new IITs is their grim placement record. The National Institutes of Technology (NITs) seems to be doing far better than the new IITs, in spite of having almost three folds the number of students than compared to these IITs.
