#2 South Africa: Next in line with a gap of 31 percent is South Africa, which ranks top of the list of emerging nations. In fact the South African men are earning around 35 percent more than their female counterparts in the same job, with no short-term signs of bridging the gap. The issue in this country relates mostly to wages among the historically disadvantaged, black African population, and doesn't affect the mostly educated white population to the same degree. This effectively means that when compared with black men, black women in South Africa work for free four months of each year. In fact only about three in every ten South African women are formally employed – either full-time or part-time. This is in comparison with 44 percent of men who are employed. Although one could argue, women stay at home to look after the household or care for children, a much larger proportion of women than men are unemployed and looking for work. That is not the only concern, women in South Africa lack of education as compared to men and this limits opportunities for women in the workplace, relegating them to lower-paid jobs.
