17 Pct of Indian Working Women Face Sexual Harassment at Workplace

Nisha Agarwal, CEO of Oxfam India says “Violence against women, whether it is sexual harassment at workplace or domestic violence within homes, is a violation of human rights. If the domestic, public and the workplace areas are not safe, then, where should women go?” “It is shocking that 17 percent of working women face sexual harassment at workplace as per our study.  Oxfam India strongly believes in the right of every woman to a workplace that is free from harassment or violence. Each of us should take a stand and say no to violence against women”.

Further the report revealed that as many as 17 percent of general population respondents were aware of the Supreme Court Guidelines on sexual harassment. It was also revealed that the awareness to Supreme Court Guidelines on sexual harassment was higher in metros, i.e. 24 percent, as compared to other areas.

Although sexual harassment is a very serious issue, it was reported that most workplaces often fail to acknowledge sexual harassment as a concern. And more than 80 percent of the respondents reported a need for a stringent law to put up with sexual harassment at workplace.
