Since its establishment, the Institute has played a vital role in providing some top notch candidates to the field of research. The Institute now ranks at 70 in the Asia 2014 rankings and is amongst the best technological institutions in the world that has managed to contribute to all sectors of technological development. It has also been considered a trend-setter in the area of education and research in the field of science, technology, and engineering. 
The IIT Roorkee has 18 academic departments that include engineering, applied Sciences, humanities social sciences and Management programs with a strong emphasis on scientific and technological education and research. The institute has produced many alumni who have moved on to found technological and social ventures in India and abroad and has played an important role in the development of India. Ten alumni from the institution have won the Padma Bhushan awards, two have won the Padma Vibhushan awards and twenty five alumni have gone on to win the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar prize for science and technology award.
