IITs are best, need more institutes: Nasscom
Bangalore: Disagreeing with Union Minister Jairam Ramesh's remarks on IITs and IIMs, NASSCOM President Som Mittal said these institutions were of the highest standards.

The number of MNCs coming to India to hire professionals from these institutions bear testimony to the standards of education they impart, Mittal said.

"I think we have some very good institutions in India and IITs have been bright example. Many multinationals come here to hire professionals from IITs and IIMs. This is a tribute to the whole set up," the chief of the premier trade body said.

Ramesh had recently remarked that the faculties of IITs and IIMs were not world class.

Mittal stressed the need for establishing more IITs and IIMs in the country and added "We need to add more faculty in IITs and across the engineering education system and need to further improve the quality of education."

He urged the U.S. to 'extensively' reform its Visa policy in tune with the globalized world. The U.S. remained the biggest market for Indian IT industry and it was concerned over the recent Visa issue. "The Indian IT industry offers the best talent and solutions for US and it should be viewed differently than ordinary immigrant issues," he said.

He said the recent allegation on an Indian IT major's immigration practices was related to 'one company' and a detailed discussion in the matter was necessary."This incident has been made big. We need to deliberate on it. We should let the company put forward its explanations."

14: HRD Minstry plus Indian Private sector plus IIT faculty should revamp and start MTECH by Research and do like the following case study I reproduced from BBC website for your ref ,,Do not indulge in blame games with emotions and fill up some fancy media space for nothing ,,also do not cause distress to IIT professors

An Indian inventor is developing clothes which keep the wearer comfortable in extreme temperatures.

Kranthi Kiran Vistakula started with a jacket and is now applying his idea to shoes, scarves and even dinner plates.

The clothes use Peltier light-weight plastic plates with a thermo electric device.

The device is powered by rechargeable batteries which can be topped up by vehicles or even solar panels. They can last up to eight hours on one charge.

Mr Vistakula works with an enthusiastic young team in an isolated building near Hyderabad city, the capital of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh.

Outside, the summer temperature is more than 40C. But Mr Vistakula looks as comfortable as if he is in a cool climate.

He is wearing a state of the art ClimaWare-jacket based on his own patented technology.

Thermal layers

The jacket works by controlling the electric current into the layers of the heat sink (3) and the cooler (5) which changes the temperature for the wearer
A Peltier plate consists of a junction between two metals. When an electric current passes through the junction, metal on one side heats up and on the other side it cools down, he explains.

The climate-controlled jacket, which weighs a little more than 1kg, has been successfully tested by the Indian army in Siachen glacier where temperatures are as low as -40C in winter.

Mr Vistakula's company, Dhama Innovations, is now developing a range of other products using the same technology.

"We have also developed shoes and they have been immensely liked by the army personnel in Siachen glacier," he says.

Frostbite is a big problem for the army and the shoes have really helped, he said.

Jacket for cows

Mr Vistakula is now setting up a manufacturing facility near Hyderabad for the mass production of his products, which include jackets, shoes, scarves, gloves and ear muffs.

He is even considering a special jacket for cows.

"Basically when the cow is cooled, it gives more milk in summer," he explained. "So we're working on a jacket like that - a huge one."

Mr Vistakula says he started to develop the idea when he moved from his home city of Hyderabad to study engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of technology.

The difference in temperature came as a shock to him.

His first attempt weighed about 5kgs and had wires and fans. Everybody joked that he looked like a bomber. Then he started using Peltier plates.

There may also be a medical application for the technology. The team is working on a product called Haemosave which can freeze blood oozing out of a wound.

It is described as a potential life saver. It uses cryo or ice therapy to stop the blood flow and contract the blood vessels.

Other medical products include knee, neck wraps and elbow wraps. These devices can go instantly from 0C to 50C and help in controlling pain

16: The discussion about IITS should not be world rankings and things but the focus should be ,,how to link up private industry like Tatas ,,reliance and Mahimdras with IIT courses ,,probbaly IITs can have both streams of courses like MTECH by course component and MTECH by research component ,,may be the Faculty and Students in MTECH by Research can ,liase with Private industry like Mahindra Life spaces to develop ,,design a low cost ,,high quality house that can be built in North east India ,,and utilizes new engg materials ,,systems and all modern amenities in a sustained way

2.may be the IIT Mtech Research Faculty can combine Automobile engg plus mechanical engg plus electrica engg and liase with Mahindra Reva ,,to improvise and provide an end top end Hydraulics ,,knuematic ,,smart chip controlled systems

3.Maybe IIT Mtech research faculty can liase with Dr Devi Prasad shettys healthcare model to and model using sophisticated computer termonals hooked to super computer ,,to devise and detect patterns of tropical fevers and cures that may arise in slums of mumbai or kanpur industrial backyard

3.May be IIT MTECH research can tie up with BAARC ,,ISRO ,,and find out new materials on Moon ,,Earth and see if we can have safe nuclear reactions that may have minimal radio active waste or even zero waste ,,this will help indias energy needs and we can also patent new techs in nuclear power commercially
I think may be we should steer our focus and deter from debates about rankings and projections

As of now ,,all indian ICT sector companies like TCS ,,INFY ,,HCL ,,WIPRO and other private players around Chennai like sri perambaludur and sorroundings all come to capus and recruit Final year BE students ,,not only that our college also hosts cultural fest and invites all other engg as non engg colleges like pachiappas ,,stell maris etc to come and participate
So in terms of alumuni and employment goes ,,we have done pretty well too

Also on a side note recently students from Pulla reddy engg college near HYD ,,another private engg college have won a boeing contest to design aircarft engine that cuts down control ,,so where do we classify these colleges

25: Dr Jagdeesh
IITs aside ,,iam from a self financed engg college called Hindustan College of Engg in Tamilnadu near madras ,,affilliated to Univ of Madras ,,yes in our case ,,we studied all by ouselves in most subjects ,,some subjects we had faculty
Having said that ,,even from this college in a class of 60 ,,yes I had tamils,,malalayalees and telugus as classmates ,, I checked the alumuni ,,except girls who are married ,,almost all guys are doing very well

Raman ,,is at Intel ,,Prasad at Motorola ,,many others at Madras and well employed ,,even some who came to australia for masters at Univ of Tasmania are well employed at Oracle ,,Motorola etc
so given the above statistics ,,our college being private and self financed ,,we have done well in terms of gaining employment (leave me from the statistics) so how should I classify my own college in that matter
Oh by the way ,,Hindustan college of engg by the way I checked on the web is now ranked as one of the best in private engg colleges around Chennai

Also now a days all indian ICT companies like HCL TECH ,,WIPRO ,,INFY etc all come to campus of our college to recruit Final year students ,,so we have done well in this respect ,,but yet we are not REC ,,OR GOVT OR IIT at all ,,but still employment statitistics are impressive so has anyone any commnets ,,also is there any HCE alumuni lurking around on the web or reading this post Plz commnet love to hear from you

There are Institutes with 100 Percent placement in Top IT Companies like TCS,Infosys,WIPRO,HCL etc., like VIT,SSN,RMK Engineering College,Kavaraipettai etc.,

In VIT more that 1600 students got placed in COGNIZANT. In Geetam University(Deemed),Vizag,Andhra Pradesh more than 1000 placed in TCS and other top IT Companies.

No doubt IITs and IIMs are good Institutes. But there is vast difference in standards from 5 IITs started (Madras, Bombay.Kanpur,Kharagpur and New Delhi and the later ones. There is always that drift in QUALITY Vs QUANTITY. In the pat the 5 IITs started with Foreign collaboration and hence the funds were not a crunch. The later started IITs lack sufficient funding.

On the other hand Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and TATA INSTITUTE OF FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH(TIFR),Mumbai stand out as outstanding Institutes of their nature.

The degeneration of Engineering Education can be seen from the mushrooming growth in Andhra Pradesh (Over 600) and TamilNadu (Over 400).

Any large-scale organization must lose some of the merits of its rudimentary beginnings. Quantity will have a coarsening effect on quality. JOHN BUCHAN, Augustus.

Incidentally I am alumni of University of Roorkee (Now IITR). The Institute has not gained any extra reputation by the name of IIT !

Mittal is in the context ,,Jai Ram Ramesh has spoken out of context

1.IITS were set up generate Manpower quickly as India was left bankrupt and dry ,,as the colonial masters left ,,also partition of India followed

2.Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru the then PM of India ,,felt the need which is 100 percent correct ,,that new indian industries ,,dams etc like Bhakra Nangal ,,Sail ,,BHEL etc needed urgently manpower like civil ,,electrical engineers etc to build India at that time and for next two decades

3.R and D takes a long time to evolve and sometimes some patents achieve commercial success some may not

4.There is no Indian Industry outside IITS to support ,,like Today we have ICT sector Wipros ,,Infy ,,Mahindras and Bharathi Air tel ,,Reliance etc ,,so some IIT graduates left abroad ,,some did IIM Mba after Graduating etc

5.India was also almost bankrupt after a few decades after independence and has to pledge Gold abroad Air India cargo flight This is a truth one cannot deny and sri Jai Ram Ramesh has to consider this fact as well ,,also another minister sri Kamalnath has written a book about How India spent time to evelove its institutions

5.it is not easy for a country to come out of its past and quickly establish its rhythem

6.IITS are inside Indian context ,,that everyone is forgeting and quickly trying a comparision on a word wide scale which is not in the context at all ,,actually IITS achieved what they are set out to do ,,create good Engg Ggraduates

7.IIT Faculty played a key role in that creation ,, I have read many blogs of NRI iitians paying tribute to their professors at IIT BTECH course even after they graduated from MIT ,,most fundamentals as part of the engg are laid out at BTECH stage

8.IITS like at Kanpur Computer science ,,Delhi Aeronautics etc have some of the excellent faculty

9.Govt of India ,,when it sets up New IITs have to workout how they can draw such faculty to new institutes ,,Faculty with great quality ,,also takes time to evolve

India has some good professors at IIT and pilani BTECH like Control systems Nagrath and Gopal ,,I studied this book as part of my btech course and many more in mechanical and electrical engg like thereja bk

10. I can give you an example to support what I say ,,Even ISRO took good three decades to master satellite tech and PSLV series of rockets ,,only with MOON mission it is at a stage,,ready to outsource and colloborate with academia and private industry ,,one such example is IIT Kanpur doing the Robotics for Indias moon mission

So for IITS to create value in terms of research and innovation ,,outside Industry in india also need to exist as well let us respect the faculty and let us restrain from dragging the faculty into this ,,rather ,,let us discuss ,,atleast now ,,it is not late ,,think how we can upgarde IITs to achieve the R and D component

Iam from AP and have some friends who after B.E from outside IITs ,,they did BTECH from REC surathkal in Karnataka ,,have appeared for GATE and qualified with 96 and 99 percentile and joined IIT delhi MTECH course ,,I asked them some questions and they do told me ,,they are doing it at IIT as it is the best and also they will have the tag of IIT upon graduation ,,while IIT B.TECH original students would have already opted for IIM MBA or even would have gone abroad to MIT or stanford

33: I think Mr.Mittal is speaking out of context here. Min.Jairam Ramesh did not comment on the quality of students rather the quality of the faculty that is not in-par with what is expected out of them.

I'm an IIM alumni and would not completely disagree with Mr.Ramesh. There are some exemplary professors and there are many who are not. But the students fill-in for them as you know the best of the best are taken into IIMs.
