Railways to issue notification for 2.27 lakh jobs
Tuesday, 21 December 2010, 18:33 Hrs
"There is a backlog of 1.67 lakh jobs which is to be filled. In addition to that, 60,000 posts are lying vacant following retirement. All these will have to be filled up. The notification will be out in two to three months," Banerjee said at a function here.
The Railway Recruitment Board has made arrangements for the candidates to take their examinations in their mother tongue, she said.
Pointing out that the railways need staff for improving safety and security, she said that around 16,000 ex-servicemen were being recruited all over the country for the purpose.
Apprentices would also be recruited directly, she said. "I cannot give jobs depending on party colour," she said.
Taking a dig at the CPI-M over job vacancies, she said, "I have been the railway minister for only a year and you have been in the government for five years. During the tenure of Lalu Prasad as railway minister you used to run the railway in his name. Why was not the backlog of vacancies cleared up then?"
She said that on coming to Krishnagar in Nadia district after 10 years, she found the condition of railway tracks to be very bad, indicating that no money had been spent on their improvement for a long time.
