AICTE rejects one-year MBA courses demand

New Delhi: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has rejected the demand to recognize MBA courses with one-year duration. AICTE believes that one-year time is too less to cover the theoretical and practical content of a regular MBA course and hence cannot grant recognition to such education programs, reports Kirtika Suneja of The Financial Express.

About 20 private institutions had earlier met HRD Minister Kapil Sibal to push AICTE to examine the one-year MBA programs and grant recognition to them. There is a huge demand for such courses among Indian students and are already recognised in some developed countries.

SS Mantha, Acting Chairman, AICTE said, "Theory can be completed in one year but the practical aspect of the MBA programme needs more time as it includes internships. We have not approved any one-year programme as every course needs to be seen vis-a-vis its practical component also."

Although many top B-schools across the world have one-year MBA programs, the AICTE recognises only the two-year MBA for freshers. There is a 15 month program for executives, which also has not been recognised by the council.

The Indian Institutes of Management (IIM) presently offer one year executive MBA programs in the country, which can be taken up by working professionals with some years of experience.
